Privacy Policy — Orbital Mechanics

Last updated: 27 July 2026

Short version: Orbital Mechanics collects nothing, sends nothing, and has no servers, accounts, analytics, ads, or trackers. Everything the app does happens on your device.

Information we collect

None. Orbital Mechanics has no user accounts, no analytics or crash-reporting SDKs, no advertising, and no third-party trackers. We operate no server that receives your data, so there is nothing for us to collect, store, sell, or disclose.

Location

If you grant location access, the app reads your latitude and longitude to work out which part of the sky is above you — where the Sun, Moon, planets and stars sit relative to your horizon and compass directions. You can also type coordinates in by hand and never grant access at all.

Your location is used on the device, in the moment, to compute those positions. It is stored only in your device's local browser storage so the app remembers it next time. It is never transmitted anywhere.

Motion and compass

If you turn the compass feature on, the app reads the device's orientation sensors so the sky view can follow the direction you are facing. These readings are used as they arrive and are not recorded or transmitted.

Data stored on your device

The app saves a few preferences in local storage so it behaves consistently between visits: your chosen theme, latitude and longitude, which labels are shown or hidden, planet-size and playback settings, and a saved birthday preset if you create one. Deleting the app (or clearing website data) removes all of it.

Astronomy calculations

All positions are computed on your device from ephemeris tables bundled inside the app. The app does not query any astronomy service, so no request revealing what you are looking at — or when, or from where — ever leaves your device. The app works fully offline.

Sharing and screenshots

If you use the share or screenshot feature, the image is handed to your device's own share sheet, and you choose what happens to it. Nothing is uploaded by the app.

Children

The app is suitable for all ages and does not collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13.

Changes

If this policy ever changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new date above.
